The noble Shaykh Saaleh al Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him, was asked:
"What is the meaning of al-Ikhlaas (sincerity)? And if the servant desires other than Allah in his worship, then what is the ruling?"
The Shaykh responded:
"The meaning of al-Ikhlaas (sincerity) is safety from ash-Shirk (polytheism);
