Shaykh Saaleh al-Fawzaan – Is Every Sufi A Disbeliever?
Is Every Sufi a Disbeliever?
Shaykh Saaleh bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan حفظه الله
Q: “Noble Shaykh, may Allah grant you success. I heard the saying of an individual explaining Kitab at-Tawheed, he said:
“Anyone who says ‘I am a sufi’ then he is a kaafir (disbeliever).”
So, is his speech correct?”
A: “No, no it is not correct. It is not that everyone who says ‘I’m a sufi’ is a kaafir (disbeliever), (rather) it is possible that he is an innovator or a disobedient person only. The sufis are not upon one level. Among them are extremists and among them are less than that, certainly.”

Note: Kitab at-Tawheed is the famous book by the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, may Allah have Mercy upon him. It should be understood by those who may be unfamiliar with that book, that nowhere in it’s text does it say that every person ascribing to tasawuf is outside the fold of Islaam. In fact, the issue of Sufism is not mentioned in the book at all. The shaykh dealt with the ideologies of the people of sufism extensively in his book al-Kashf ash-Shubuhaat (The Removal of Doubts). His writings are recommended as they are highly beneficial, and they are explained by those who are grounded in knowledge (i.e. Shaykh Fawzaan, Shaykh an-Najmi, Shaykh al-Uthaymeen, Shaykh al-Jaami, Shaykh Rabee’ bin Hadee, Shaykh Zayd al Madkhalee, etc), free from the errors such as the one presented in this fatwa. May Allah protect the Ulema of Ahlus Sunnah, and guide the people to what He loves and is pleased with, aameen.
