Fatwa on ‘Valentine’s Day’ – Shaykh Saleh al-Fawzaan
The Seriousness of Celebrating Valentine’s Day
Question:
“May Allah be excellent to you, virtous companion. These are a number of questions concerning what is called ‘Eid al Habb (Valentine’s Day)’. They are hoping for a clarification to the seriousness of this celebration and publicizing a fatwa from the Permanent Committee (The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta’) on this matter.”
Answer:
“And what is this Eid al Habb (Valentine’s Day)? (It is) The eid of the Christians. It is not permissible for the Muslims to participate in, nor to encourage them to it, nor bear witness to their falsehood. These are the holidays of the Kuffar, do not encourage them. Love – for who is this love for? Love for Iblees? Or love for the Messiah – Salaam and Salah be upon him? Or love for what is between them (i.e. the Christians)? No love is between them while they are Kuffar (disbelievers):
‘You would think they are united, but their hearts are divided’ [Surat al Hashr, Ayah 14]
They have said: ‘love with a woman’? That is an atrocity.”

Thank you for that clarification. I do agree wholeheartedly with this decision. However, is it wrong to send flowers to your Christian Mother during this month of February but not say it is for Valentine’s day?
